State-owned rail monopoly Ukrainian Railway (RAILUA) was incorporated as a public JSC in December 2015, consolidating its regional rail operators. The company owns almost 21,000 km of rail track and a fleet of c. 4,000 locomotives, 110,000 freight and 5,000 passenger railcars. RAILUA accounts for 62% of total freight transportation in Ukraine, being the largest freight operator in Europe, and 36% of domestic passenger transportation. It is the largest domestic employer with a c.300,000-strong labor force.

Rail freight recovers slowly in May, we cut full-year forecast

Cargo transportation in Ukraine increased by 3.5% m-o-m to 29.3 Mt in May, decelerating to just 1.3% in y-o-y terms after a 22% y-o-y jump in April and bringing 5M26 growth to 4.1% y-o-y. Total freight turnover (distance-adjusted) increased by 2.7% m-o-m but stood 16% lower y-o-y.

Ukrainian Railways — CEO details prospective freight tariff hike

Ukrainian Railways CEO Oleksandr Pertsovskyi told local media that a 30% freight tariff increase planned from August is expected to be followed by a further 15% hike from January 2027. However, the decision on the second-stage increase will be considered separately, he said.
